Folic Acid and Your Oral Health

Foods with folic acid.
With 2021 winding down and New Year’s Resolutions on the horizon, we know it’s popular for people to aim to improve their diets. Instead of picking a broad health goal, try sticking with something smaller that can still make a big difference–like improving your folic acid intake if you’re not getting enough of it!

Folic acid, also known as folate and B9, is an important vitamin that helps our body produce enough red blood cells. This helps ensure that our cells are able to properly divide and carry oxygen everywhere that it’s needed, making it a key component in the operation of our brains, hearts and even gums.

To better understand how it’s beneficial to your teeth, here’s a quick Q & A session on folic acid and your oral health.

Q: What are oral signs of not getting enough folic acid in your diet?
A: When you don’t get enough folic acid in your diet, some signs may be frequent gum inflammation, gums that bleed, bad breath and even cavities.

Q: What are some natural ways to get more folic acid in your diet?
A: Foods like legumes, including beans, peas and lentils, are typically an excellent source of vitamin B9. In addition, just a half-cup of cooked asparagus offers roughly 30% of the recommended daily intake of folate.

Q: Can you get too much folic acid?
A: Yes. Just like any vitamin or supplement, too much isn’t always a good thing. Signs of consuming too much folate may include stomach problems, irritability, behavior changes, and skin reactions among other things. Before starting a new supplement, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor to see if it’s needed or recommended for you.

Q: What other vitamins are good for oral health?
A: A number of other vitamins and nutrients are good for oral health, including calcium which helps keep your teeth strong, phosphorus to help absorb calcium, and Vitamin C to help keep your gums healthy and hold your teeth in place.
