No More Ugly Teeth Stains!

You drink a lot of coffee, red wine or cola. Or you often munch on carrots or love to eat oranges. Maybe you even use tobacco. What is common about these foods and habits? They take their toll on teeth whiteness and leave telltale stains. Tooth enamel also wears with age, exposing more of the yellow tooth core, known as dentin. These and other similar situations can leave you with a dull, lifeless and stained smile.

Teeth Whitening Options

There are a number of ways to whiten your teeth that differ substantially in cost and effectiveness. Remember the saying, “You get what you pay for”?

Here are three different methods to consider:

  1. In Office Whitening

The most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure today, in-office tooth whitening can whiten, brighten, and revive your smile, helping you to look years younger while boosting your self confidence and appeal!

Advantages: Very fast results in very little time in a safe, controlled office setting with higher concentrations of teeth whitening agents. Generally only requires one hour of “chair time.”

Disadvantages: More expensive than other treatments. Some stains, related to trauma, over fluoridation or use of tetracycline antibiotics may prevent you from achieving desired results.

  2. Take Home Kits

Advantages: Can be done at home and are less expensive than in-office whitening. Many dentists think this may be the superior way to whiten because they are used over longer periods of time and some of the bleaching agent remains on the tooth surface, increasing the effectiveness of the next application. Kits include custom-made trays that conform to the shape and size of your teeth.

Disadvantages: This process takes longer than in office whitening, a drawback for those in a hurry to brighten their smile.

  3. Over-the-Counter Whitening Kits

Advantages: Can be done at home; these kits are the least expensive way to whiten your teeth.

Disadvantages: Because of the easy availability of OTC whitening kits, overuse is common. Overuse can cause a weakening of the tooth enamel, irritation to the teeth and gums, and uneven or undesired color changes due to overexposure to bleaching agents.
